It all started when she met Sudan. Maya and her mother Lesley visited Ol Pejeta with the Tyack Family (of Ol Pejeta Vlog fame) during one of their filming sessions. "Maya was very affected by the fact he is the last male of his species" said Lesley. After their trip, Maya's class learned about endangered species, and the effect that poaching has had on black and white rhinos. As part of this, Barbara and Khadia Tyack visited Hillcrest and gave a presentation on rhinos, and what Ol Pejeta was doing to help. Maya was inspired.

"One day, instead of doing her homework, Maya disappeared and emerged with a design for a sticker. She wanted to sell bumper stickers to raise money to save rhinos. So, it was ok she hadn't done her homework! She does art sometimes after school, and her art teacher helped her perfect her drawing." Lesley said. They got the bumper stickers printed, and Lesley asked Maya's teacher if they could do a fundraiser at school to sell them. Other children in Maya's class wanted to help too, and made milkshakes and baked goods to sell alongside the stickers.

The children unanimously decided they wanted their money to go towards Ringo's care

"People have been so supportive and I have been asked to send stickers to Sweden and some have gone to Norway! T
he kids wanted the money to go towards Ringo's care. Hopefully if this generation grow up with the love and respect of Kenya's wildlife, the future will be rosy for rhinos, elephants and lions." says Lesley.

Way to go Hillcrest!
