Maasai Cricket Warriors help the northern white rhino to keep batting on

"Last Male Standing" is an animal welfare event held annually in Laikipia, to raise awareness of the plight of the northern white rhino. There has been a dramatic escalation in rhino poaching in recent years with over 6,000 rhinos killed since 2008 across Africa. Ol Pejeta Conservancy is now home to the last three northern white rhinos left on the planet.

Over a weekend in mid-June, cricketers and spectators from a variety of different ethnic, social and cultural backgrounds will come together to take part in the 2016 Last Male Standing Rhino Cricket Cup at Ol Pejeta with two shared goals: To raise awareness and enhance rhino conservation efforts within the region, and to provide support to two fantastic Kenyan cricketing programs:

  • The Maasai Cricket Warriors use their cricket skills and media attention to increase awareness of issues such as Female Genital Mutilation, Gender Equality & HIV with their communities.

Last year’s inaugural tournament attracted global media coverage as some of the world’s most inspirational and colourful cricketers competed at the most unique and spectacular cricket location imaginable – on the plains of one of Africa’s greatest wildlife conservation areas in the shadow of the snow-capped Mount Kenya.

The conservation event is also a showcase for the global reach of cricket and the benefits that sport can bring, with teams as diverse as the local Maasai Cricket Warriors, The Obuya Academy (Nairobi) and the Australian High Commission all involved, along with representative teams and players from around cricket clubs in Kenya and overseas (England, South Africa, Australia).
